Second Life for SDF Installations

Each year the Seattle Design Festival (SDF) proposes a theme and invites the community to respond with installations and programs that speak to the many ways design improves the quality of our lives. Among our goals as an organization is to nurture relationships among designers, citizens, city leaders, and future-thinking business innovators to enrich the dialogue. We encourage partnerships across disciplines to promote knowledge sharing, expand conversations, and invite the public to inform our work.

Although SDF is finite—running for two weeks each September—the conversations that take place during the festival are nearly always manifestations of larger conversations that continue on long after the festival. This can be seen through events such as the upcoming Recharge the Battery Street Tunnel Community Discussion, which builds off of design concepts and community input that was gathered in September as part of the SDF2017 Recharge the Battery design competition. Other examples include Futurama Redux and How Do You Want To Live?, two SDF2017 exhibits that will be on display in the large and small galleries, respectively, at the Center for Architecture and Design, December 7 – February 17, and the Mighty House, which is now installed at the Interbay Encampment.

The following seven projects are more recent examples of Seattle Design Festival Block Party and PARK(ing) Day installations that have been given a second life through partnerships with city and local organizations. Special thanks to the Downtown Seattle Association for finding homes for several of these installations in Seattle’s parks.
