  • Design in Public

  • Design for Belonging gathers city builders, community organizers, artists, and a diverse public to explore what it takes to create culturally responsive, thriving, resilient, and welcoming neighborhoods. We seek to amplify voices that are historically underrepresented in design planning efforts. We acknowledge the powerful impacts of the built environment, and we are also eager to expand the discussion to the less physical, more human-centered aspects of community development: cultural identity, social cohesion, collective psyche, and civic engagement. Topics of discussion will include:

    • + What makes a neighborhood welcoming and inclusive for all?
    • + How can design promote TRUST within neighborhoods and communities?
    • + What is the role of design to preserve and promote cultural identity in underrepresented communities?
    • + Can we and should we build community engagement into public policy?
    • + How can design guidelines, design review boards, and urban policies best serve the communities over which they govern?
